US Trade Rep Lighthizer says that he is "hopeful" for a breakthrough on NAFTA with the next few days, and Pres. Trump shoots back "OK if there is no breakthrough".
Even if Trump really wanted that, Bachand said, he couldn't get it.
But Senate Finance Chairman Orrin G. Hatch said in a statement that the deal should in the end include the three countries.
Trump administration officials want to pry open Canada's restricted dairy market and do away with an existing NAFTA provision that allows Canada to challenge US anti-dumping claims through an independent panel.
China is unable to give us a deal that is acceptable. Lighthizer told the president he prefers to negotiate the trade deals one country at a time.
"This is not a, hey, they can do it if the feel like it".
When the first round of NAFTA renegotiations began on August 16, 2017, Mexico was the trading partner under pressure from the Trump administration.
The administration said it expected negotiations to be concluded within months.
Guajardo said the teams had not yet touched the issue of a USA proposed sunset clause that would kill Nafta after five years if it is not renegotiated again.

It's all the more risky because of the short time frame in which Mexico and the US are looking to seal a trilateral agreement. But Sen. Lamar Alexander warned against including a sunset provision in a final NAFTA pact. Guajardo indicated the two sides have made progress and that they will meet again next week to continue their talks for a fourth straight week.
