Sanders during Tuesday's briefing brushed off accusations of racism against President Trump amid his contentious feud with former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman with a familiar pivot, citing economic gains by African Americans during Trump's time in office.
Newman was sacked from her position as Director of Communications at the Office of Public Liaison late previous year - a post that made her the highest-ranking black woman in the White House.
Ryan was on "The Karen Hunter Show" to promote her own book, when was asked asked if there's a section on Manigault Newman - whom she considered a friend before the former Trump aide turned on her.
She writes that Trump and his campaign were "eager for my help" and she wanted to experience working on a campaign at a "high level".
She met Pope Francis as part of a foreign tour with her husband and stepdaughter Ivanka a year ago.
Manigault Newman, who has painted a damning picture of Trump and alleged there is a videotape of him using a racial slur, told The Associated Press she is not going away. Her friendship with Trump eventually secured her a campaign role which paved into a job in the Trump administration as an assistant to the president.
"According to anonymous Apprentice staffer sources, he'd called her a "fat piglet" and bemoaned that they didn't book 'the hot one, ' referring to Khloe's sister Kim Kardashian", Manigault Newman writes.
The White House, however, can't avoid the awkward questions - and when press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about the n-word allegation, she gave a strikingly noncommittal answer.
Omarosa also reportedly taped Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump calling her after she was sacked to offer their condolences and say they had no idea it was happening. The only way to shut him down, she said, is to "don't give him the oxygen" that comes from news stories, clicks, and likes. The people that Manigault Newman said had played her the tape or had knowledge of it denied it. On Tuesday, he praised chief of staff for "quickly firing that dog".
Critics condemned Trump's tweet for what they said were racial and sexist undertones. Democratic US Representative Frederica Wilson, who is also an African-American, told CNN.
That's not true. During Obama's eight years in office, black employment rose by 3 million jobs, compared to 700,000 jobs in the first 18 months of Trump's presidency.
"There is absolutely no way she can redeem herself". Jackson said. "Recording someone under these circumstances is the political equivalent of spitting on a man". He said Manigault Newman had called him "a true champion of civil rights" until she was sacked. But "Omarosa can't be trusted", he said.
In a related development, a Trump campaign official said the campaign, which is gearing up for his 2020 re-election run, had filed an arbitration against Manigault Newman for breaching a 2016 confidentiality agreement. "There are pretty significant legal issues that we hope don't develop into something that, that'll make it ugly for you".
Now, it's important to note that Ms Manigault-Newman is not a reliable source.
If Omarosa "is the one to get some traction on people seeing how truly raggedy this administration is enough to take action. we should reconsider letting her get a to-go plate from the cookout".
