Disney and Marvel knew they had a hit on their hands when Ant-Man and the Wasp earned $11.5 million from Thursday night preview showings alone.
The Ant-Man and the Wasp opening weekend estimate of $76 million marked a roughly 25% increase over the Ant-Man debut, which is just slightly better than the 24% increase that 2010's Iron Man 2 ($128.1 million) posted over its predecessor, 2008's Iron Man ($98.6 million), and the 24% uptick that 2013's Thor: The Dark World ($85.7 million) posted over its predecessor, 2011's Thor ($65.7 million). Complications ensue when the antagonist Ghost (Hannah John-Komen) throws a wrench into their plans. After dominating the first half of 2018 with blockbuster flicks Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, the studio has now laid claim to its 20th consecutive No. 1 opener at the box office with Ant-Man and The Wasp. This is the fourth film in the Purge franchise, all of which have delivered strong domestic performances on very low budgets with 2016's The Purge: Election Year serving as the highest grossing of the lot, delivering just shy of $80 million. Universal and Amblin Entertainment's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom recently charged past US$1 billion at the worldwide box office. In three weeks, the dinosaur tentpole has earned $333.3 million in North America. Everyone's favourite crime-fighting family has crossed the US$500 million mark domestically and US$700 million worldwide. It's the first animated film to ever surpass $500 million at the North American box office, and the 12th film ever to do so.
Universal and Amblin Entertainment's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" scored $27.6 million from 86 global territories. The sequel made $5 million this weekend in China, taking its tally there to $250 million.
At the specialty box office, Roadside Attractions and Miramax's Whitney bowed with US$1.3 million from 452 locations. Lakeith Stanfield, Armie Hammer, Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun, Danny Glover, Terry Crews, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, and Omari Hardwick round out the cast. Incredibles 2 made $29 million at the United States box office this weekend, bring its domestic box office total to $504 million.
When audiences next find Scott and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) in Ant-Man and the Wasp - the pair sat out the events of Avengers: Infinity War - Scott is in the tail end of his government-mandated house arrest and Hope and father Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) are fugitives from the law.
