The Derrick Lewis and Francis Ngannou heavyweight fight was poised to be a thriller when it was announced as the co-main event at UFC 226 - but it did not live up to the hype. He won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2012 against some of the best competition in the world at the time and defeated Frank Mir and Roy Nelson in his first two UFC fights. "I think a lot of it depends on how he argues this case here and what USADA comes out and says about that test".
Cormier's move up to challenge Miocic was only the third superfight in UFC history between reigning champions of two weight classes. That's only a 10 lbs. difference, considerably less than the 40 lbs. of extra weight that Miocic carries when compared to Volkan Oezdemir, Cormier's last opponent at light-heavyweight. And if we fight for 25 minutes, there is no way he gets his hand raised. I haven't lost a wrestling match at heavyweight. "I'm a two-division champion, baby".
Following his historic victory, Cormier called out former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar who just so happened to be in attendance at T-Mobile Arena. He's certainly in discussion for it alongside Georges St-Pierre and Demetrious Johnson. Light heavyweight Khalil Rountree kicked off the PPV card with a surprising first-round stoppage of Gokhan Saki, a heralded Dutch kickboxer in his third pro MMA fight. Meanwhile, the People's Champion Stipe Miocic has endeared himself to the average Joe by being a throwback to another generation when a professional athlete also held a regular job in the offseason, as does the part-time firefighter. "But Saturday, I'm the new champion". Miocic was not impressed and actually shoved the ref, but he was done and only taking more damage.
"It's another fight for me", he said.
"So I'd say 'one of the greatest of all time, ' which isn't too shabby to say but [it's] hard to say the greatest". "I spent all camp knocking out my training partners, and today I got to do it in the octagon".
Miocic is the favorite to win tonight's fight.
"That's fine", Miocic retorted.
"The only way he can win is to knock me out".
