Colbert dedicated a two-part "Double Stuf Oreo" version of his opening monologue to Trump and Putin after the two leaders met for a summit in Helsinki on Monday, just days after the USA indicted 12 Russian military intelligence agents for allegedly hacking DNC servers ahead of the 2016 election.
If that mad scramble was a frenzied view of U.S. -Russia relations, the two leaders took a more relaxed approach in their first encounter.
Republican Will Hurd said he had seen Russian intelligence manipulate many people in his earlier career as a CIA officer. He added: "There are quite a few of them for us to pay attention to".
Mr Trump said he has "great confidence" in his intelligence agencies who have concluded Russian Federation interfered in the election. Mr. Trump seemed to accept Putin's denial of interference, despite the US intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation did in fact meddle in the 2016 election.
"For the president of the United States to side with President Putin against American law enforcement, American defense officials, and American intelligence agencies is thoughtless, dangerous, and weak", Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer said.
Dismissing the claims as "sheer nonsense", Mr Putin said he had not been aware of Mr Trump's visit to Moscow a few years before his 2016 election.
The incident is believed to be linked to the poisoning of a former Russian spy in March.
The US and Russian leaders came out of their meeting in Helsinki expressing a desire to cooperate on global challenges, after talks on an array of issues from Syria, Ukraine and China to trade tariffs and the size of their nuclear arsenals.
Now that same approach is allowing Putin to make common cause with the president of the United States to spurn the determination of American intelligence agencies and deny a USA special counsel's findings.
Months later, Trump said he fired FBI Director James Comey because of the lingering investigation into Russian meddling and possible collusion with elements of Trump's campaign.
Trump also held a private meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which may have contributed to the two countries' different understandings of their summit's outcome.
The summit started late because Mr Putin arrived in Helsinki about a half hour behind schedule in another display of the Russian's leader famous lack of punctuality.
Was it USA complicity in the Kiev coup that ousted the elected pro-Russian regime that caused Putin to seize Crimea to hold onto Russia's Black Sea naval base at Sevastopol?
Asked about the timing of the indictments, Putin said he was "not interested in this issue" and described the Mueller probe as belonging to "the internal political games of the United States".
This indictment, which consists of a series of unsubstantiated allegations, was seized upon by top Democrats and sections of the media to demand that Trump call off his meeting with Putin.
That came three days after the US Justice Department indicted 12 Russians for hacking Democratic Party computers. On Monday, officials said another Russian agent had been arrested for seeking to influence U.S. politics. Israel is deeply concerned about Iran's presence in Syria, where Iranian forces and proxies have been fighting on behalf of the Syrian government, which is also supported by Russian Federation.
"I have confidence in both parties".
On the question of nuclear tensions on the Korean peninsula, Mr Putin praised the U.S. leader over efforts to resolve difficulties with North Korea.
Even Dictionary.com appeared to get involved, continuing the theme of throwing shade it demonstrated last week with Kylie Jenner.
The Russian Foreign Ministry tweeted back: "We agree".
