It seems as though this has always been in the works, considering that Netflix itself launched a free-to-playStranger Things: The Game to promote Season 2 in October past year. That means simplified storytelling that progresses automatically, and likely no interactive battle sequences.
That's isn't exactly what's happening.
Minecraft: Story Mode will start streaming to subscribers later this year, described as an interactive narrative series in five episodes. As suspected, the Minecraft release will be an "interactive narrative story", similar to the stories the service has featured since last summer.
Separately, we've learned of a new Telltale Games project based on Netflix's hit series Stranger Things - though no release window or additional details were provided.
According to a TechRadar report citing anonymous sources (that's your cue to bust out your grains of salt), Netflix has partnered with Telltale Games, and will add Minecraft: Story Mode to its service soon - potentially even as early as this year.
Taking all of this into account, we're expecting big things from developer Telltale Games when it comes to the first proper paid-for video game.
A Stranger Things video game is now in the works, it has been confirmed.
Telltale's Stranger Things project, meanwhile, is part of Netflix's marketing and promotion efforts, but will not be on the Netflix service.
At the moment however, no deal between Netflix and Telltale Games has been made official, though the sources say that an announcement of such a partnership is imminent. When you're playing a video game, and you're actively engaged with a shooter, you're on the very edge of your seat sort of constantly. As a result of this, Telltale has first crack at a Stranger Things video game that should be available in the not-too-distant future. Furthermore, Netflix has already dabbled in this field with interactive adventures like Puss in Book and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile, both of which are aimed at a younger audience and allow kids to choose how they want the story to play out.
