Rep. Mark Sanford, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, lost his SC congressional seat Tuesday hours after the president injected himself into the bitter Republican primary by stoking memories of the incumbent's public extramarital affair seven years ago.
In Virginia on Tuesday, Republicans nominated as their US Senate candidate Corey Stewart, who brought Trump-style brashness and a promise of a "vicious" campaign to his race against a more moderate challenger backed by the state Republican Party.
The result is that he has faced a primary challenge from Katie Arrington, a state representative who is campaigning on her loyalty to Trump. One ad said "it's time for Mark Sanford to take a hike - for real this time".

"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA", the president tweeted.
However, given Sanford was able to make a comeback, but not survive his attacks on President Donald Trump, Scarborough deemed GOP primary voters to be a "Trumpist cult".

In the Second Congressional District, incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Taylor will face the victor of the Democratic primary between former U.S. Navy commander Elaine Luria and schoolteacher Karen Mallard.
Arrington is accusing Sanford of seeking the spotlight and impeding Trump's agenda.
Sanford had represented the Charleston district on and off for six terms, with eight years in the Governor's Mansion in between.
Despite her attempt to tie herself to Trump, Arrington supported Florida Sen.
Though former national security and foreign policy officials, echoed by congressional Democrats, say he gave up much and got little in return from Kim, Trump described their summit as "an interesting and very positive experience". He is better of in Argentina.
House Republicans otherwise were upbeat Wednesday after primary elections in several states as they met behind closed doors to discuss the coming midterms. In his remarks Tuesday night, he said: "I stand by every one of those decisions to disagree with the president".
If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the top two will head to a runoff on June 26 to decide the party's nominee.
In Sanford, he chose a well-known former governor, who among other criticisms held him partly responsible for a shooting at a congressional baseball practice by stoking national tensions.
Dimitri Cherny is also running. He says he plans a "vicious" general election campaign against Kaine, who battled Trump as Hillary Clinton's vice-presidential candidate and has a huge fundraising advantage.
Elsewhere, voters made their picks for key November elections for Senate, House and governor in Virginia, Maine, Nevada and North Dakota, on a day with considerably less drama and lower stakes than primaries in recent weeks.
Democrats will also be watching the outcomes of Virginia's 2nd District (GOP Rep. Scott Taylor), 7th District (GOP Rep. Dave Brat) and 5th District (retiring GOP Rep. Tom Garrett), where they hope to be competitive in the fall. She has served in the Statehouse since 2016.
