Should Cleveland lose Game 4 of this series Friday night and get swept by Golden State, James would be the fifth player to actually be on the floor for a pair of 4-0 defeats in the NBA Finals. With his 43-point performance in Game 3, Durant joined Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal as the only players to score at least 25 points in their first 13 finals games.
James averaged 34 points, 8.5 rebounds and 10 assists in the series, but as has been the case in the past, he didn't have enough help.
James scored 51 points in Game 1, going 7-of-16 from the field on shots from 10 feet and out.
It was the first sweep in the NBA Finals since 2007, when James was dismissed by a powerful San Antonio team in his first one.
And then, nearly by accident, James delivered a devastating zinger on the former front office of the Trail Blazers, who drafted Greg Oden first overall instead of Durant.
"I came back because I felt like I had some unfinished business", James added. However this year the Cavaliers have made many changes to their roster, including bringing on point guard George Hill & the aggressive and fierce shooting guard Rodney Hood and these two made their presence known in Game 3, despite the loss.
A James slam dunk capped a 14-4 Cavs run to open the second quarter, putting Cleveland ahead 39-38, but Golden State answered with a 11-4 run and stretched the half-time lead to 61-52.
The challenge of trying to combat the Warriors - whether James hopes to do it in Cleveland or elsewhere - was made plain not long after Game 4 started. "I had emotions of you just don't get an opportunity like this on the road versus Golden State to be able to get a Game 1, and I let the emotions get the best of me".
"This is about the journey, getting up every day and going to work with these guys, it was incredible", Durant said.
A favorite hasn't emerged to sign James in the event he opts out of the final year of his deal with the Cavaliers, but there is a group of teams that figures to jockey for his services come July 1. In only his second game since missing six in a row with a bruised knee, the wise veteran delivered 11 points, nine of them coming from behind the arc. James also laid out a potential blueprint for the Cavs to follow if they want to keep him. Every team in the National Basketball Association will be attempting to persuade the King to play in front of their home crowd next season. "I'll take either one". But the loss of Chris Paul to a hamstring injury in the final minute of Game 5 doomed Houston's chances, as Golden State won Games 6 and 7 - despite trailing at halftime of each - to make it back to the Finals. They're going to make runs. Meanwhile fans took to Twitter to congratulate the Warriors for their complete dominance in the finals.
