Sunanda was found dead in room no. 345 of the Leela Palace hotel in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, on January 17, 2014. It was earlier concluded that she had been murdered after the domestic help alleged that the couple often fought and Sunanda had said she would disclose everything and he was finished. Rejecting the charges against the the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, the party said Tharoor was being "hounded, persecuted and maligned".
"This is coming from the manufactured conspiracies of the BJP and the Union government and the Home Ministry, under whose dictates officers of Delhi Police are labouring and working", he claimed. No one who knew Sunanda believes she would ever have committed suicide, let alone abetment on my part.
Tharoor has termed the police chargesheet "preposterous" and said he would "contest it vigorously".
"The chargesheet also mentions marital discord as the cause of suicide and Shashi Tharoor has been booked under relevant section of the law", the person added, speaking on condition of anonymity. Further investigation was done involving the FBI to find out whether it was a case of murder or suicide.
The same day, the case was transferred to the Delhi Police Crime Branch. "Our probe shows Sunanda, the legally wedded wife of Tharoor, was harassed and she went into depression".
The Delhi Police charged Tharoor with "abetment of suicide" and subjecting his wife Sunanda Pushkar to cruelty under the Penal Code.
On the basis of this PIL, in August, the Delhi High Court had questioned the city police over the delay in probing the death.
The autopsy report revealed Pushkar died due to a radioactive poison.
February 2015: Her viscera samples were sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) lab in Washington.
Subramaniam Swamy, a leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, went to court demanding a special investigation into Pushkar's death. Swamy, however, moved the Supreme Court in January this year.
