Police said the officer was killed in a residential neighborhood after responding to a suspicious vehicle, and that she may have stumbled upon a burglary in progress.
A 16-year-old boy who's charged in the death of a Maryland police officer told detectives he had been in the driver's seat of a vehicle while others were burglarizing a home and that he drove at her, according to a police document.
The police department praised Caprio for "the lengthy investigation and hard work that Officer Caprio invested into what she could have simply considered a trash complaint". Vinson confirmed such accounts but said the officer was pronounced dead at a hospital where she was taken.
There are multiple suspects and at least one is believed to be armed, according to Baltimore County authorities. There is a possibility that the black Jeep Wrangler the suspects were in ran the officer over.
"We are proud of the bravery and the courage and the sacrifice of all the men and women who serve in our police force", Jones said.
Vinson said he could not confirm her injuries or cause of death, and said that probably won't happen until an autopsy has been performed.
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The son of a Boston police captain pleaded guilty Monday to plotting to use guns and homemade bombs to attack a college campus to support the Islamic State group, three years after his arrest when his father alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation. An unmarked vehicle with law enforcers, including one officer cradling a rifle in the back seat, drove past and was waved through by police manning the intersection. Gov. Larry Hogan ordered USA and state flags flown at half-staff through the day of Caprio's funeral.
UPDATE 3: Update from Baltimore County Public Schools...
The officer was not immediately identified.
The Sun reported that one witness ran into his house and told his father: "Dad, Dad, a cop just got run over out front".
Tony Kurek told The Associated Press that his son, who was in the family's yard, saw the officer with her gun drawn and confronting the suspects in the vehicle.
Logan Kurek, who is a volunteer firefighter, said he heard his younger brother "frantically screaming" and ran outside to perform CPR.
Amendt said his wife also ran outside and tried to revive the officer, to no avail.
"I heard, 'Get out of the car!' 'Get out of the car!' Get out of the car!' at least three times, and then a pop", Amendt said. It's a quiet community. Motorists should avoid Belair Road from Forge Road to Ebenezer Road. Three elementary schools were kept on alert status for hours, with students and teachers told to stay in their school buildings as police continued a search for the suspects.
Vinson advised parents to contact school administrators for instructions on how to pick up their children.
