Manchester United are eyeing a deal for midfielder Fred if they can reach agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk, sources have told ESPN FC. Since then, the Citizens have bowed out of the pursuit of former Internacional man, and this has allowed United with a free run to pursue the midfielder's signature.
Brazilian midfielder Fred looks to be on his way to Manchester United for a fee believed to be around £50million.
Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in signing the Brazil global this summer, but the player himself has now said that he plans to delay any decision about his future until after his involvement in the World Cup in Russian Federation.
The 25-year-old's impressive form has also caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League as Manchester City were strongly linked in January while United have expressed their interest in recent months. Shortly after, both clubs, City and United talked with Shakhtar and with my agents about a possible transfer.
Shakhtar previously got 40 million euros for Fernandinho and 50 million euros for Alex.
With Michael Carrick's retirement, there is a void in the midfield that will need to be dealt with and surely, a player like Fred could go a long way in terms of bolstering our forces.
Whatever basic formation this tactic is applied to - 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 - Mourinho utilises either one or two deeper-lying midfielders: Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba or Ander Herrera. On that front, a move for Fred seems like a step in the right direction.
The move is set to be completed before the World Cup, which kicks off on June 14.
