Kent State witnessed a notorious shooting incident in 1970, when members of the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four unarmed students at a protest against the bombing of Cambodia. As a result, a mass student strike forced many colleges and universities to shut down, and may have helped topple the Nixon administration.
In a subsequent tweet, she posted another photo from her shoot and wrote that she has "no apologies" for the photos. She plans on exercising her Second Amendment right and stand her ground.

A woman's photos celebrating her recent graduation from Kent State University have stirred up a social media uproar thanks to the unusual accessory she chose for the occasion - a high-powered, semi-automatic rifle.
The university prohibits students, faculty, and staff from arming themselves with "deadly weapons", according to its website. "I find it insulting that the school values the lives of their guests more than those attending the university for four years".
She also released a flurry of tweets in response to the thousands of comments from the public.
In another tweet, she made it clear her gun is an AR-10 and not an "assault rifle" as many had claimed.
Kent State's firearms policy allows alums and visitors to carry outdoors on campus, but students, faculty and staff are prohibited from doing so. A campus officer was with the group as well, as Bennett had notified the university of her intent to photograph with the rifle.
"#CampusCarryNow", she wrote in a Twitter post that's been retweeted more than 1,800 times and garnered more than 8,500 likes.
