(Web Desk) - A portion of an under construction flyover, near the railway station in India's Varanasi, collapsed today killing at least 16 persons while more were feared trapped under the debris, officials said. Police suspect the occupants of the vehicles, passerby and labourers, who were working on the flyover, are buried beneath the slab.

Earlier in the day, Raj Pratap Singh, a member of the committee constituted by the government to probe the incident had said the investigation in the matter was underway.
A massive operation has been launched to rescue the people trapped under the rubble.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has mourned the loss of lives in the mishap and directed officials to ensure prompt rescue and relief, a state government spokesman informed. On the other hands, expressing its deep shock over the tragic incident, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) administration has alerted the doctors at Sir Sundarlal Hospital (SSH) and Trauma Centre.
The Prime Minister also spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Varanasi is the parliamentary constituency of the prime minister.
7 teams of NDRF have been installed to remove the stranded vehicles under the pillar.
Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said that seven NDRF teams comprising 325 rescuers have been deployed at the spot to carry out rescue operations. "I pray that the injured recover soon", he said. The chief minister also announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation for families of those who died in the incident and Rs 2 lakh for those injured.
The state government had ordered an inquiry but didn't take any action against top engineers and officers for poor quality of construction work, he said.
