The Colorado School Finance Project released data in December that found that inflation-adjusted salaries for Colorado teachers fell by 7.7 percent between the 2010-11 school year and the 2015-16 school year, and that the average Colorado teacher salary was about $7,000 below the national average. There are 40 schools in the Poudre School District, and about 30 have signed up to do a walk-in. Pendleton School District Special Programs Director Julie Smith says educators are faced with more and more children who are the victims of traumatic experiences, and teachers in the district are learning how to deal with that. Yes, costs have risen, and if we continue to put off building new schools, and delay maintaining the current ones, the costs will continue to rise.
However, lawmakers we spoke with say they've been very clear that the education budget will not change. An overall demand from the teachers in Arizona was a 20% raise and public education to be brought back to pre-recession levels.
"That does add up for our schools", she said.
Some school districts were forced to close because teachers did not report for work. In addition, teachers that are appointed in various government schools and colleges are inexperienced because of which students suffer the most.
"When there's a void in leadership in anything, it gets filled up with something", McCauley said.
The Supreme Court's McCleary decision has actually decreased classroom size in the lower grades, creating the need for even more space.
"In making this quick turnaround, our students will be able to complete the school year prior to Memorial Day (the last day of school will now be May 25) and our support employees will not lose an additional day's pay in this earning period".
