The game will also begin to see weekly events starting in May with new rewards to be won.
The Hungering Deep will be the first content update to be released in Sea of Thieves and is now scheduled for some time in May.
We've been listening closely to our community, and we know how keen they are to hear how we plan to grow Sea of Thieves. I think Rare is on the right track with its plans, which also include "three more major updates" during fall and winter. It's due in May and will introduce a "new AI threat" to the game that will "encourage players to interact in different ways" and "bring crews together" in new ways.
The studio discusses its content plans in depth in the developer video below. The only hint given is that it will introduce new rewards and new mechanics. Those events will introduce new mechanics, new ways to play with things like new hidden treasures, trading companies, and other things that enhance the world.
During summer, two more content updates will be released.
Another update is arriving this summer called 'Cursed Sails, ' which adds a new ship and the 'Forsaken Shores, ' a completely new region. The former will introduce a new ship type, the latter will introduce a new part of the world with new AI threats unique to that area of the world. The Hungering Deep will be a permanent fixture in the game, with new mechanics and rewards, but will kick off with a timed event that Rare plans to start teasing soon. Similar to The Hungering Deep, both of these updates will also include new gameplay mechanics for players, new AI threats to challenge and new unique rewards to claim.
The one thing Rare has constantly reiterated is that players are going to shape how Sea of Thieves continues to grow, it's clearly going to be a community focused project so be vocal about what you're after. These are on the back burner for now whilst we add to the game in other areas. Expect plans to continue to be fluid but always with the goals listed above as a guiding principle.
Sea of Thieves biggest problem at the moment is a lack of content.
