The US State Department said the United States has proof at "a very high level of confidence" that the Syrian government carried out the attack but is still working to identify the mix of chemicals used.
CGTN's Jack Parrock explains, the strikes have re-ignited the war-of-words between Washington and Moscow.
State TV channels compared what they described as U.S. President Donald Trump's reckless action with the responsible, statesmanlike stance taken by Putin. "Russian Federation will demand a meeting of the UN Security Council, I think, for sure", Dzhabarov, who is the deputy head of Russia's foreign affairs committee, was quoted by RIA as saying.
In response to the alleged poison gas attack in the town of Douma that killed dozens of civilians last week, the strike was aimed at cutting off chemical weapons production in Syria.
"To make matters worse, it is Russian Federation alone that had agreed to be the guarantor of the removal of all chemical weapons from Syria", Haley said. She also told Russian Federation if it had done its job then Assad wouldn't have these weapons.
"We are open for those contacts, they help to understand each other better", Lavrov said.
"This is grotesque", Pierce said of the Russian statement as she left an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council called by Russia on US threatened military action in response to the alleged attack.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council Friday that "there is no military solution to the conflict". The US and its allies, Nebenzia alleged, are setting the stage to "unleash a military scenario against Syria". "We can not take such risks", he said at a forum.
Trump has largely avoided criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin by name, though he singled him out in a tweet over the weekend for supporting Assad.
Earlier, Russian's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said the attack had been staged by foreign agents. It also said Russian officers found no patients with chemical attack symptoms at a local hospital, and no indication of any burials having taken place of the victims.
"After examining the videos and images of victims published online, they (intelligence services) were able to conclude with a high degree of confidence that the vast majority are recent and not fabricated", the report said.
Syria serves as an important access point to the Mediterranean Sea for Russian ships and a hub for Russia in the Middle East. France is already involved in the USA -led coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.
