Few expected Manchester United to gift City the title on Sunday as they took on bottom of the league side West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford, and City boss Pep Guardiola admitted during the week he would be playing 18 holes of golf during the Sunday game.
A Manchester City stalwart for 10 years, Vincent Kompany celebrated his third Premier League title 'round his nan's house, among a gang of United fans. "The previous ones we almost threw it away, I've seen many teams win it as champions for the whole season but in our case it's the first time".
"I may be the first one thinking about next season".
"You can't take it for granted", Kompany said.
"I'm extremely proud about this and extremely aware of how fast these moments can go".
City captain Kompany watched the match at the house of his Mancunian wife Carla Higgs, who invited her United-supporting father to join the party.
"It differs (to previous titles) in the fact we were consistent the whole season".
That is just one of a welter of statistical feats that have led some to rank City among the Premier League´s greatest ever teams. "When I was 20 I would have been a flawless player for him", he said.
"You can't stay in your front room when you win the Premier League", one of those associated with City said as he exited the venue to no doubt continue the celebrations elsewhere.
"Today I'm happy, I suppose my team-mates will roll their eyes a bit when I say this but I've never been able to retain a title and I want see if this team's got it to carry on and be even more successful". It's not a dynasty, it's one title. I think there was a period of adaptation that was needed, for him and us.
But Kompany said: "I had that feeling when I woke up this morning but I don't like to wait and see a team lose, so it's a different kind of experience today".
City will lift the trophy regardless of the result, but you'd be safe to assume they will want to do it in style, and stick a few goals past the Swans.
"It's been a fucking long journey... especially if you've been a blue for more than forty years in your heart!"
