The controversy involved Clinton's use of a private email server for official correspondence when she was secretary of state under then-President Barack Obama, including for messages that were later determined to contain classified information. Clinton has said she partly blames Comey's handling of the investigation for her loss, as do many of her supporters.
Comey was anxious that the country's top law enforcement agencies would suffer if the public later discovered the Federal Bureau of Investigation had obtained new emails in the Clinton probe.
The belief that Clinton couldn't lose is the only way to make sense of what a lot of people said and did in October of 2016.
Comey writes: "Assuming, as almost everyone did, that Hillary Clinton would be elected president of the United States in less than two weeks, what would happen to the FBI, the justice department or her own presidency if it later was revealed, after the fact, that she still was the subject of an FBI investigation?" For the record, Trump says Comey is "an untruthful slimeball".
On the July 5, 2017, press conference, with a presidential election merely months away, Comey gave a protracted assertion criticizing Clinton nonetheless lastly explaining the FBI's reasoning for not recommending bills.
In March 2017, Comey confirmed the FBI was investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Trump, who has accused Comey of leaking information to the press and lying about their interactions, initially praised Comey at a campaign rally in MI on October 31, 2016. "Hindsight is always helpful, and if I had to do it over again, I would do some things differently", he wrote.
"I have read she has felt anger toward me personally, and I'm sorry for that", Comey writes of Clinton, according to ABC News.
