"We believe that the efforts of Allegiant's workers to join together and speak with one voice is having a positive impact on the culture of safety at the airline".
In 2014, a flight headed from the Ford to Florida was forced to make an emergency landing in SC after a loss of pressure in the cabin. Allegiant told the Times after the review that the results gave the airline a clean bill of health. These issues include mid-air engine failures, aborted takeoffs, rapid descents and flight control malfunctions.
60 Minutes also cited a report from the FAA that indicated Allegiant flights were three and a half times more likely to suffer an in-flight breakdown than flights operated by American, United, Delta, JetBlue, or Spirit.
Allegiant, a low-priced carrier based in Las Vegas, operates flights out of Lehigh Valley International Airport to several Florida destinations.
"The FAA exercises rigorous oversight of Allegiant, as they do all airlines operating in the United States", Allegiant Vice President of Operations Eric Gunst said in a written statement issued after the CBS story aired. Claiming the incidents happened in the past and that the airline has cleared all recent FAA audits.
Other airlines at the airport include Via Air, which flies to eight destinations in the USA, and Surinam Air, which travels to Aruba, Guyana and Surinam.
It's not the first time Allegiant has come under fire.
"The story features cherry-picked interviews with people involved in the lawsuit, including featured comments from John Goglia, a paid plaintiff's witness presented by CBS as an unbiased industry expert". "Allegiant complies with all FAA requirements and participates in numerous voluntary safety programs to ensure we operate to the highest standards". "To be clear, any employee who fails to report safety-related concerns through available channels is in violation of company policies, and may also be in violation of federal regulations".
Allegiant's workforce is made up of more than 4,000 dedicated and hard-working people who wake up every day thinking about how to move our customers safely from one place to another.
For the lengthy piece, Allegiant provided a statement from Vice President of Operations, Eric Gust. That expansion, airport officials say, is to handle the more than 2.6 million passengers, a almost three-fold increase from 901,862 passengers in 2012, at the fast-growing air facility. "In this role he oversees all system pilots and pilot training operations, regulatory compliance and flight standards, and the safety and security of all operations, team members and passengers". In 2016, mechanical problems forced a plane headed to the Ford from Florida to turn back, starting a chain of events that delayed passengers more than 15 hours. The FAA later overruled Allegiant's objections and produced the documents.
In his statement, Gust said Allegiant is a leader in reliability and has the second-lowest cancellation rate among all US airlines.
