The University of Houston star and former Texans Quarterback led the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC championship game last season as Keenum started 14 games going 11-3 in 2017. It was interesting to see Keenum make the first major wave of news during National Football League free agency and not strategically wait and see what Cousins does, which could have improved his asking price from a desperate team looking for a silver medal.
Case Keenum's brief tenure with the Vikings appears to be over.
Keenum doesn't have as proven a track record nor as high of a ceiling as the Broncos' No. 1 option, Cousins.
Whatever the Broncos' objections, they quickly moved on to Keenum - the No. 2 QB available in the market - and reached agreement on a two-year deal worth at least $36 million - or $18 million a year - a source told 9News.
"I still think we're not too far away", Elway said at the combine. "Obviously, we have to get better at that position".
Signing Keenum now opens the door for the Broncos to pass on a quarterback and trade down out of the No. 5 spot, which could result in a QB-needy team jumping ahead of the Jets in the draft. We didn't play well there a year ago. This figure and the term of the contract - unlike with Cousins - should not preclude the Broncos from drafting a quarterback fifth overall if they choose to go in that direction. With AP Photos. The Denver Broncos are hoping to repeat the success they had with Peyton Manning in pursuing another free-agent fix at quarterback. Gang Green hasn't won a Super Bowl in 49 years, and the quarterback would become immortalized if he could bring a championship to the much-maligned franchise. Siemian, Lynch and Chad Kelly are under contract for 2018 with the Broncos who also reportedly considered Kirk Cousins and Teddy Bridgewater. Brock Osweiler is a free agent and isn't expected back with the Broncos.
