On Sunday, a whole bunch of South Floridians were dead set on stopping a hit-and-run driver high on narcotics on Sunday...and it included a dude just bashing away at the fleeing vehicle with his handy sledgehammer. During his initial attempt to run, he was approached by two people trying to stop the driver from leaving by shouting and banging on the window.
A hit-and-run driver's vehicle was attacked by an angry mob who battered it with sledgehammers after he tried to flee the scene of a huge crash.
Cell phone video captured the intense moments after an SUV crashed into several cars Sunday morning in Miami.
Per a police report, 25-year-old Maxwell Lagutenko hopped a median and slammed his SUV into an oncoming vehicle.
"That's insane. You know, you have a crash, you stop", witness Anthony Jimenez told Local10.
Even though the SUV was damaged in the crash, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and began moving away from the scene, according to the video. He attempts to flee the scene of the crash several times but each attempt is blocked by witnesses in the area. Moments before, a driver got out of his white minivan and began slamming the SUV with a sledgehammer, breaking every window of the auto.
One man bangs on its windows, while another shakes his fists furiously and tries to open the car's locked door screaming 'Don't move'. The police said the man was found and taken into custody.
But the driver would not pull over, so the cop backed off because of the Miami PD's no-chase policy for non-violent crimes.
Lagutenko appeared in court Monday and faces numerous charges, including reckless driving.
