One person is dead and another in critical condition after a bus carrying high school band members to Texas from Disney World, crashed into a ravine on the Alabama-Florida line Tuesday.
Channelview Independent School District spokesman Mark Kramer confirmed in a statement that the accident involved a charter bus carrying Channelview High School band members. The students were on a trip from Houston, Texas. Between 12 to 20 people were injured and one person died in the early morning incident.
Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Major Anthony Lowery said the bus plunged off Interstate 10 into a deep ravine Tuesday morning, and multiple helicopters are responding.
"We have multiple injuries; the bus went down into a ravine", said Chris Elliott, a Baldwin County commissioner who helped out at the county emergency management center following the crash. He spoke with both of them after the crash and was on his way to the hospital.
Chief Lowery said several ambulances and helicopters are now being used to evacuate passengers.
"We have one confirmed fatality", he said.
The Sheriff's Office said injured people were taken to hospitals in Baldwin County as well as Pensacola.
A TOUR bus reportedly carrying more than 50 people has careered off an embankment near the Alabama-Florida state line.
Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Hoss Mack confirmed the death Tuesday morning while talking to new reporters. The rest of the injured, including a Baldwin County deputy hurt during the extrication process, suffered minor wounds, he said.
Rescuers used every piece of equipment on every truck to reach them, Mack said: "This is what we call an all-out". He also said officials from the National Transportation Safety Board were on their way to the crash scene. Kramer's statement said the district had only limited details in the immediate aftermath and was in contact with law enforcement in Alabama to get more information.
The bus had been due to take the children back home to Channelview, Texas, in Houston.
Only hours before the crash, the band's Facebook page had been updated to show a large group posing outside Disney World, where the band performed at a music festival on Saturday.
The bus was operated by the First Class Tours charter company out of Houston.
