Four days after the Browns dropped out of the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes by trading for Tyrod Taylor, the Broncos appear to have followed suit. The Broncos reportedly attempted to trade for Keenum two years ago after Peyton Manning retired and while Kubiak was still Denver's head coach.
Or as Elway put it at the scouting combine: "I didn't say it".
According to a National Football League source, Case Keenum will sign with the Denver Broncos when free agency begins on Wednesday, in a move that both takes away one of the Vikings' potential competitors for Kirk Cousins and ends whatever chance they had of going back to Keenum if Cousins opted to sign with another team. The 30-year-old started in place of the injured Bradford in the 2017 season, throwing for 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns.
The Broncos are the first to act in the musical chairs of quarterbacks this offseason. For teams missing out on Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency, Cousins is thought of as the top consolation prize. The Broncos have missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, and at the moment, linebacker Von Miller is the only former Broncos draft pick on the roster who has been named to a Pro Bowl. That doesn't all go on the players.
According to 9News Denver, Keenum's deal is expected to be a short-term agreement, suggesting it won't preclude the Broncos from taking a quarterback with the fifth overall pick in next month's draft if they so choose. I feel like we can get right back in the thick of the things rather quickly. "Is it because he had a good team around him?"
Keenum started eight games under Kubiak in 2013, completing 54.2 percent of his passes for 1,760 yards with nine touchdown passes against six interceptions.
Now the Broncos hope he can replicate that play for the forseeable future in Denver.
Case Keenum is about to cash in on his improbable 2017 run.
