"Our Top 20 safest airlines are always at the forefront of safety innovation, operational excellence and the launching of new more advanced aircraft like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787".
Airlines recorded zero accident deaths in commercial passenger jets previous year, according to two independent reports released at the beginning of 2018.
Good news, travellers! 2017 was officially the safest year in commercial aviation history.
It has also named its bottom-ranked carriers for safety for the past year.
In Asia, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines and Singapore Airlines made the top 20 for safety. Global and USA commercial aviation deaths have been trending downward for more than a decade due to a variety of factors.
"For instance, Australia's Qantas has been recognized by the British Advertising Standards Association in a test case in 2008 as the world's most experienced airline".
In 2014, 864 people died in five crashes, including the losses of two Malaysia Airlines 777s: MH370, whose fate is still unknown, and MH17, downed by a missile over eastern Ukraine. Only two carriers based in the US made the list: Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines.
Thomas explained that the list is based more on the operational practices of airlines and professionalism of flight crews, as opposed to any problems caused by flaws in the aircraft when they were designed or manufactured.
While there weren't any commercial airline fatalities, unfortunately there were 10 airline accidents resulting in 44 deaths, mostly comprising of cargo planes and turboprop aircraft.
"The fault was entirely with a fault in manufacture but the pilot skills of the Qantas crew saved the plane according to Australia's crash investigators", says Thomas.
Now, if you need to get somewhere but can't afford to spend the money on any flights with these airlines, AirlineRatings.com has also released the Top 10 Safest Budget Airlines list.
Unlike a number of low-priced carriers, these airlines have all passed the stringent International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) and have excellent safety records.
Colorado's Frontier Airlines is a new entry on the 2018 list, taking a slot vacated by Singapore's Jetstar Asia. All received top marks of seven out of seven for safety.
Airlines with the worst safety ranking include North Korea's Air Koryo, which flies to China, Russia, and North Korea in soviet-era planes, as well as four Nepalese airlines - Buddha Air, Nepal Airlines, Tara Air and Yeti Airlines.
