A Palestinian protester throws back a teargas canister that was sacked by Israeli soldiers during clashes on the Israeli border with Gaza, Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017.
At around 6:30 pm sirens sounded in the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council in the northwestern Negev.
The rockets came amid rising tensions in Gaza and the West Bank following US President Trump's announcement that the US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
On Wednesday, Trump announced the relocation of the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - a move which drew numerous negative reactions from Muslim communities around the world.
Rockets or mortar rounds were fired Thursday afternoon at Israeli army forces.
"In response to that fire and the projectiles fired at Israel throughout the day that fell short in Gaza, an IDF tank and an [Israel Air Force] aircraft targeted two terror posts in Gaza", the military said in a statement.
Twenty Palestinians from the village of Qusra in Samaria were arrested by Israeli security forces Wednesday night in connection with an attack on a group of Jewish children who were hiking in the area last week. Trump also said the United States would move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, though he set no timetable for that.
Jerusalem's status is among the most hard issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the United States traditional position has been that it must be negotiated between the two sides.
